The answer engine optimization checklist

This checklist scores your organization across five areas AI search tools use to decide who to recommend: answer-first content, structured data, entity consistency, reviews and AI Overview presence. Score yourself honestly, two points for yes, one for partial, zero for no. Most healthcare organizations score under half. When you are done, request a consultation for a second, more technical read.

Self-Scoring Checklist

0 of 15 questions answered

1. 1. Answer-first content

Does every page open with a direct, 40 to 60 word answer before any narrative?
Do your service and condition pages answer one clear question each, rather than several?
Do you have an FAQ section, written the way patients actually phrase questions, on your most important pages?

2. 2. Structured data and schema

Do your pages use schema markup so search engines and AI tools can identify what each page is about?
Do pages with an FAQ section carry FAQPage schema specifically?
Has your site been technically audited for crawlability and structured data coverage in the past year?

3. 3. Entity consistency

Is your organization's name written identically across your website, directories and provider profiles?
Are your addresses and phone numbers consistent everywhere they appear online?
Do your provider or location pages match what is listed in Google Business Profiles and major directories?

4. 4. Reviews and reputation

Do you have a consistent process for generating new reviews across locations?
Do you respond to reviews, positive and negative, in a documented way?
Is your average rating and review volume competitive with the other organizations in your market?

5. 5. AI Overview and AI search presence

Have you checked whether your organization appears in AI Overview results for your core services?
When you ask an AI tool a question a patient might ask, does it recommend you?
Do you know which competitor gets recommended instead, when it is not you?

Score yourself

Add up your points, two per question, 30 possible.

0 to 10: Just getting started. Most of the mechanics AI search tools rely on are not in place yet.

11 to 20: Making progress. Some structure exists, but gaps are likely costing you visibility.

21 to 30: Ahead of most of your market. Worth a technical review to find the remaining gaps.

What this checklist does not tell you

A self-score is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Organizations using this framework with a full technical review have seen results like Southern California Health System's 22x increase in AI Overview traffic. If you want that level of detail for your own organization, request a consultation.
